National Taiwan Museum
The National Taiwan Museum , located in the center of Taiwan's capital city, was founded in 1908 and its construction completed in 1915. The facility was one of the most representative public structures erected by the Japanese colonial administration in Taiwan . The architectural style was a synthesis of Renaissance and Baroque, presenting a symmetrical and elegant design with exquisite engraving and bas relief. In 1935, the museum held its 40th Year Commemorative Taiwan Museum Fair , by which time the museum had become an eminent heritage museum and historical landmark. The National Taiwan Museum maintained collections and exhibits which summed up the essence of Taiwan 's natural history and cultural history. In the long run, it preserved a host of invaluable cultural assets revealing Taiwan to be a beautiful island possessing cultures of great diversity.
Presently, the museum plans to install a below-ground exhibition hall which will physically illustrate Taipei 's basin geology and the development of local cultures. The museum will also be cooperating with the owners of the former Taiwan Land bank, located across the street, in the planning of the capital city's first museum park. This will contain two new museums: the Taiwan Museum of Manufacturing and the Taiwan Modernity Museum. ] www.ntm.gov.tw |
Amis Kakeng Musical Group
The Amis Kakeng Music al Group was founded in May 1999 by several members of the A-mei aboriginal people. The group performs music with traditional percussion instruments and has devoted several years to researching and reviving the traditional bamboo instrument of A-mei people. Their efforts have resulted in the preservation of A-mei tribal music that had been feared lost for decades. After the performance, the audience will have the opportunity to experience hands-on how to make one of these exotic instruments from bamboo. ] www.Kakeng.idv.tw ^ |

11/3 Night of Chinese Culture - National Palace Museum
- Classic Dance of Pear Orchard Drama by the Han Tang Yuefu Music Ensemble |
 |
National Palace Museum
The National Palace Museum houses an exquisite collection of cultural artworks from China 's dynastic era including ceramics, jades, bronzes, paintings, classical book editions, and archives. The collection encompasses 700,000 artifacts and is the world's largest treasure house of Chinese artwork. In addition, the museum also houses a treasure trove of rare artwork from across Asia such as Central Asian Muslim jades, Tibetan Buddhist cultural artifacts and thangkas, Japanese lacquer work, painting sketches, currencies of exchange used across Asia , Asian regional diplomatic documents, maps of topology and geography.
The National Palace Museum is currently pursuing a more global approach by expanding its exhibits from the existing focus on Han culture collections, related research and exhibits, to include local Taiwan, Asian regional, and globally eminent cultural collections. It is moving away from a stress upon its dynastic collection in order to actively promote international cultural exchange and integrate this with indigenous art activities. To provide visitors with expanded exhibition space and improved services, the National Palace Museum will be completing a series of renovations by the end of 2006. The museum also plans to open a new branch in southern Taiwan and, at the appointed time, establish an interdisciplinary dialogue through holding exhibitions contrasting art concepts, Asian cultural diversity, and regional characteristics. ] www.npm.gov.tw |
Han Tang Yuefu Music Ensemble
The Ensemble, founded in 1983, has put great effort into tracing the origins of Nan Guan music and into training singers and instrumentalists in its proper performance. In preserving the essence of the ancient Nan Guan tradition, Han Tang Yuefu incorporates the Musical Theatre of the Pear Orchard ( Liyuan xi ), a branch of southern music popular during the Song and Yuan dynasties (12 th ~14 th centuries AD). By combining Nan Guan music and Liyuan drama and dance, the troupe creates programs of classic musicals that are traditional in spirit but contemporary in form. ] www.hantang.com.tw |

11/4 Night of Contemporary Art in Taiwan
V Taipei Fine Arts Museum - Folksong Suites by Chai Found Music |
 |
Taipei Fine Arts Museum
This was Taiwan 's first modern art museum and its goal has been to plan exhibitions promoting Taiwan contemporary art, to host collections of Taiwan and overseas art, and to encourage related art education and research. The museum opened its doors in 1983 and its development foci have consistently been modernization, internationalization, localization, and refinement. The museum promotes international exchange through The Taipei Biennial, which provides exhibition space in Taiwan for international artwork. At the same time the museum's financial support provides Taiwan local culture and art with a window for moving onto the international stage. The architectural design of the museum presents the viewer with four towering walls of glass which reflect the ambient landscape and cityscape, integrating internal and external space. The museum is indeed a city landmark and a striking symbol of Taipei . Outside of its role providing exhibition space and a setting for instructing fine arts education, it also provides dialogue and leisure space and enhances the spiritual life of city residents. ] www.tfam.gov.tw |
Chai Found Music Workshop
In 1991 a group of musicians got together with the aim of reviving Chinese musical traditions and finding new creative possibilities while building upon those traditions, all the while preserving the essence of sizhu music (Chinese chamber music). Thus Chai Found Music Workshop was formed. The instruments of Chai Found are the six most representative instruments of the Chinese musical tradition: the erhu, the di, the pipa, the guzheng, the yangqin, and the ruanxian. The traditional emotions of Taiwanese folksong will be presented through sizhu music and its instruments. ] www.cfmw.com.tw |
